The biggest consideration in any effort to infiltrate the community is the legal and ethical issues that would govern those actions. Immigrants have rights and they must be respected in the country. It’s important that these people would know that the government respects them as persons and as citizens of America. The most important role I could play in the community is to make sure that even the immigrants and the Arab Americans will not become unwitting tools of terrorists. 2. Based on the reading assignments, what status, rights and protections would you afford someone who was an American citizen captured in the United States in the act of terroristic violence? How about someone who was a foreign national engage in terrorism in the United States? An American citizen fights American forces abroad? A foreign national, but not a member of a nation’s military, fighting American forces abroad? Would torture of any of these subjects ever be justified if it could save lives? American Citizen An American citizen captured in the country committing terroristic violence will be captured and imprisoned under the rules of law. Foreign National A foreign national committing terroristic activity in the country will be detained depending on the Attorney General’s mandates, and will be tried either inside the country or outside it. American Citizen Fighting American Forces Abroad If the American citizen fighting American forces abroad will be captured, he will be treated as a prisoner of war provided that he meets the criteria provided for in the Geneva Convention. He will have the rights of a POW and will be treated accordingly. Foreign National Fighting American Forces Abroad A foreign national who is not a member of a military unit will be accorded a prisoner of war status until such time that his status will be determined by the appropriate tribunal. If the foreign national turns out to be a terrorist, then, he will be punished the way terrorists should be punished in accordance to law. 3. What are the different perspectives concerning Just War? Can the war on terror be properly characterized as a just war? Under what circumstances would fighting terrorism cease to be just? Why? The different perspectives of Just War are: †¢ Just War is only permissible as a last resort when all other non-violent means have been exhausted. †¢ A war can only be just if it is conducted by who society deems to have the authority to do so. †¢ Just war happens to remedy the wrong committed against society. †¢ To fight a war that does not have a chance of succeeding is not just. †¢ The ultimate goal of just war is the re-establishment of peace. †¢ It is just war if the violence in the war is proportionate to the injury endured. †¢ A just war does not target civilians and all efforts must be made so as not to harm civilians. The war on terror can be considered just because the proper authorities are out to get the villains in order to make the society safe for the citizens. Terrorists do not discriminate between military and civilian targets, as such, they must be stopped to avoid the killings of civilians. Fighting terrorism ceases to be just when the country has endangered citizens in the process. For example, if the U. S. will engage the whole of Afghanistan in war just because the Al Qaeda had its beginnings in that country won’t be just. It’s not fair to generalize that every Afghanistan is a terrorist. Also, war will become unjust if the wrong people are targeted by the authorities. Say for example that every person coming from the Middle East and who looks like Osama bin Laden will be detained by authorities because of how they look, then, that action is not just anymore. It is already a discrimination against individual persons. 4. How serious is the problem of anti-Americanism here at home? Should people be accountable for inciting violence when they glorify violent acts against America but themselves do not engage in it? What remedies are available to the government, if any, to deal with schools, mosques, and charities that indirectly support terrorism while not actually engaging in it? What should the remedies be? Anti-Americanism in the United States is often on issues that involve the presence of troops in Iraq, the operations in Afghanistan and global warming. Many Americans do not want the American troops to continue being in Iraq. There are constant protests and demonstrations asking the government for the troops’ withdrawal. At the same time, the government’s campaign in Afghanistan is viewed by many citizens to be unreasonable and should be stopped. Many American Muslims believe that putting all of the blame on Osama bin Laden and his group is not right. There are also a lot of demonstrations and protests calling for the government to do something about global warming. Meanwhile, Pipes (2005) reports that some American Muslim schools have been teaching things that tantamount to being anti-American. As an example, an American-Muslim student told the Washington Post in 2001 that for him, being American is just about where he was born, and it does not define him. Some schools are also teaching things against the Jews, while promoting the supremacy of Islam. Pipes relates that a textbook in a Muslim school in Virginia has stated that only Islam is the true religion, and all others are false. First graders are easily influenced and reading this text would make them believe that people who are not Muslims are inferior to their race. The government, especially the education ministry, has to take a direct control over what materials are being taught in schools. The schools must not be allowed to focus too much on religion. There must be a law prohibiting minority schools to engage in activities or teach lessons that would indirectly support and promote terrorism. 5. Give your overall assessment of the USA PATRIOT ACT. Do you think it has contributed to the lack of terror attacks in the United States since 9/11? If you were in Congress, would you vote to renew the act as is? Would you change anything? Why or why not? Before the USA Patriotic Act was passed into law, electronic surveillance had to undergo a lot of red tape before it can be approved. Sharing of information between intelligence units and law enforcement agencies was very limited because the law does not say to what extent should information be shared. This could have resulted to missed opportunities to prevent acts of terror in the country. When the Patriotic Act was enforced, every ground rule was established on how information will be obtained and shared. Surveillance of every information, financial or otherwise, became permissible. Even phone conversations can be tapped into. Because of this, the terrorist groups have to devise new ways of communicating, which possibly thwarted further acts of terror after 9/11. In this sense, the Patriotic Act is able to curtail further terroristic activities in the country. There are, however, some parts of the Act that speaks of human rights violations. For instance, indefinite detention of immigrants is not reasonable. It would strike fear in the hearts of those who are being loyal and good citizens of America. While the innocent would fear the Act, it would make terrorists wary of committing acts of terror. They would have to be very clever to go unnoticed. Overall, the Patriotic Act has served its purpose despite flaws in some of its contents. If I were a member of Congress, I would vote to renew the Patriotic Act. It may not be perfect but it has kept the country relatively free of terror attacks after 9/11. However, there would be some changes on the Act, which addresses controversial issues like indefinite detentions, secret trials, and giving vast powers to the executive branch. Democracy is a system of governing a nation by empowering the citizens rights and decision making within any operational field of the government. In more simple approach, democracy is a governing idea where citizens have the right to elect their government in an independent and liberal environment (Cohen and Allen 2013). However, there are some ideological conflicts among various definitions of proper democratic practices. Moreover, the democratic practice allows the common people to select their representatives as a governing body to rule the nation as per the boundaries of respective constitutions. However, Democracy does not only mean free and independent election system. Rather, appreciating the privileges of common citizens and their rights in every aspect of governing the nation is the pillar of the democratic approach. From the early stage of modern civilization, democracy had a different way of exposure (Cooke 2018). Democratic structure of each nation is individual consideri ng individual national and cultural identities. As per the most modern democratic approaches, democracy is more related to participation of people, human rights, rules of low and constitutional practices rather than focusing on the elective power of the people. This diverted implementation is causing frequent political and socio-cultural chaos across the world. Legal equality, political freedom, and constitutional rule are the three main pillar of a democratic nation. On the other hand, other parts of the human civilization also include the judicial review as a part of their democratic structure. Democracy can be classified into two ideological approaches namely Procedural Democracy and Authentic Democracy. Procedural democracy is largely related to capitalist democracy, while authentic democracy is more emphasised on direct approach of socialised democracy (Foster 2013). For both of these practices, corruption can make meaning of democracy nothing but an empty slogan. Procedural democracy is more emphasised on the bill of rights and protect minorities. However, authentic democracy encourages the independent and liberal civilisation having equal legal and economical constraints. Authentic democracy is more focused providing basic needs of citizens like health, food, shelter and education in exchange for very less amount of domestic value (Gardiner et al. 2014). From the age of evaluated monarchy system, the authentic democracy has been dominated by other democratic ideologies. However, according to some researcher, only democracy cannot provide political and personal freedom unless the institutions of civil society are also present. Most of the western countries follow the democratic approach of Parliamentary sovereignty while maintaining judicial independence (Mirra et al. 2013). However, other parts of the human civilization also include the judicial review as a part of their democratic structure. Authentic democracy is possible only in presence of constitutional laws and the basis of the proper conception of political and governing approaches. Recently, there is a tendency of claiming the agnosticism and sceptical relativism implementing the philosophy and the fundamental approach correspond to democratic forms of political structure. From the Democratic point of view since the ultimate social decisions cannot be acceptable which is determined by the majority, it will be considered as a subject to variation according to different political trends (Rizvi 2013). According to the history, a democracy without values and constitution can easily transfer into biased and disguised totalitarianism. Removing misconception of democracy in youth by transparent understanding of origin to an implementation of democratic approaches can lead the society towards the ideal stability. Some of the researchers claim that authentic democracy is the most direct and proper approach to democracy. However in terms of implementation of authentic democracy has been proven wrong throughout the history of democratic revolution. The concept of authentic democracy is simpler, while it is more complex for executing within a cosmopolitan environment. However, most of the cases the significant distractions come from the elected government and major political groups (Schusler and Krasny 2015). Lack of concept about democracy and ideological conflict within constitutional practices are the major causes of this operational failure. On the other hand, some of the democratic countries have successfully implemented the authentic democracy within a particular period of history. Ancient Athens is one of the ideal examples of direct or authentic democracy where the governing body voted themselves on major factors. The majority of assembly's vote decided most of the court case in Ancient Athens. According to some experts, authentic democracy or direct democracy is not implemented anywhere in the worlds. Rather, the idea of democracy has been converted into liberalist oligarchy. This diverted implementation is causing frequent political and socio-cultural chaos throughout the globe (Shiller 2013). Preventive liberal execution of constitutional rules and election system are making this whole situation more complicated leading towards the ultimate destruction. However, there is no optimum implementation of a democratic approach to stop the beginning of political annihilation. The stability of this political imbalance is possible only in presence of proper conception of political and governing approaches amongst the young generation of the globe. On the other hand, incorporating youth in a political movement is not the ideal way to access this stability. Rather, removing misconception of democracy by transparent understanding of origin to the implementation of democratic approaches can lead the society towards the ideal stability (Taft and Gordon 2013). The moral and cultural simplicity can be the only way to teach the new generation about effective and unbiased democratic system. The human civilization should also include the authentic democracy influenced judicial practices as a part of their democratic structure in order to hold the stable political environment irrespective of any geographical and demographical differences. As per the above discussion, it can be said, that the fundamental structure and practical implementation of democracy can be classified according to its operational classification and implementation. However, for both Procedural Democracy and Authentic Democracy practices, corruption can make meaning of democracy nothing but an empty slogan. On the other hand, conceptual lack of democracy and ideological conflict within constitutional practices are the major causes of this operational failure. The Grapes of Wrath The Grapes of Wrath The Grapes of Wrath is an eye-opening novel which deals with the struggle for survival of a migrant family of farmers in the western United States. The book opens with a narrative chapter describing Oklahoma, and the overall setting. It sets the mood of an area which has been ravished by harsh weather. "The sun flared down on the growing corn day after day until a line of brown spread along the edge of each green bayonet. The surface of the earth crusted, a thin hard crust, and as the sky became pale, so the earth became pale, pink in the red country, and white in the gray country." (Steinbeck pg.3) Steinbeck, in a detailed fashion described the area in great detail. Not only was the area stricken by a drought and extreme temperatures, but to add to the difficulties, the families of the area were bombarded by high winds and dust storms which barraged their houses, crops, and moral. The idea was made clear, quite early, that the farming plains of Oklahoma were a cruel and difficult place for a family to make a successful living. The reader is first introduced to a character by the name of Tom Joad, a man who has been released early from the penitentiary on parole after serving four years of his seven year sentence. Tom, once released, begins the trip back home to his family on their forty acre farming estate. Tom, through the aid of a helpful truck driver, is given a ride to the general area of his house. It is interesting to see how Tom manages to hitch a ride with the truck driver, who under normal circumstances, would not have given any rides to hitch hikers, simply due to a sticker on his cab which reads "No Riders." Tom however, through cunning reasoning skills, is able to get what he needs. "Can you give me a lift mister," said Tom. "Didn't you see the No Riders sticker on the wind shield?,"the driver proclaimed. "Sure, I seen it. But sometimes a guy will be a good guy even if some rich b%#@rd makes him carry a sticker."(Steinbeck 11) Technically, if the driver refused, he would not be a "good" guy , and if he took the hitch-hiker, he would be a "good" guy, and would prove that he was not one whom a rich boss could kick around. Through his actions in the opening scenes, we learn a little bit about Tom Joad, and what he is like as a person. Once Tom is dropped off, he meets up with an old minister named Jim Casey. The reader momentarily learns of Jim's inner struggle before he joins Tom in accompanying him back to his house. Meanwhile, the Joad's (tenant farmers) were being evicted from their house by the owner of the land, and were making plans for a trip to move in with Uncle Tom. Upon the arrival of Tom and Jim, they are quick to discover, through the knowledge of Muley, an old friend of Tom, that his family has already left, but were unable to reach him to let him know what was happening to them. Tom and Jim eventually catch up to the family at Uncle Tom's cabin and are greeted with open arms. Soon after their arrival, the family is once again forced to leave. After purchasing a truck, the family heads for California in the search of a home and work, but not without a struggle with Grandpa who does not wish to leave. The family is forced to drug him to bring him along, only for him to later die along the way of a massive stroke. Casey decides to come along with the family while still struggling with his internal conflict. As the trip lengthens, the family meets up with the Mr. and Mrs. Wilson one night along the side of the road. The two families befriend each other and continue the trip west together. Both families continue to travel west together until they are separated when Mrs. Wilson becomes fatally ill, which forces the Wilsons to stay behind. The struggle of the Joad's is becoming more and more apparent now as they experience the realities of life. Cruel police officers, cunning salesmen, and ignorant people all add to the total picture and struggle the family is enduring, and bring the reality of the entire situation to a front. Grandma dies, as well as Rose of Sharon's baby which only adds to the trouble. Connie eventually walks out
